Campaign
Link Creator

A handy helper for creating links with tracking parameters.

Why use UTM/tracking parameters in campaign links?

Adding UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters to your links allows you to track the source of traffic to your website with greater accuracy. For example, if you link to YourWebsite.com from a YouTube video, UTM tags help identify which video or specific link in the description drove the traffic. These tags don't alter the destination; users still arrive at the same page, but they can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of your marketing efforts. In short, UTM parameters enable better analysis of your campaign's performance.

Your link

Links should always start http:// or https://

?

This will usually be your own website. It could be the homepage, or it could be a page on your website.
It should always start http:// or https://.

For instance:

https://www.mywebsite.com
https://www.mywebsite.com/products/my-product.html

You should always add the next three:

Select Medium...
?

UTM Medium refers to the channel of the marketing activity as a broad grouping. Wherever possible you should pick an existing channel as opposed to 'Other'. If you think a marketing channel is not listed please contact support@ringside.ai and we'll look to add it.

?

UTM Source should be seen as the sub-category or further explanation of the medium. For example:

If the Medium was Paid Search this could be Google, Microsoft, etc.
If the Medium was Organic Social this could be Facebook, Twitter, etc.
If the Medium was Email this could be MailChimp, Klaviyo, or if sending an email to a person manually (ie one to one), Manual, etc.

?

UTM Campaign is the campaign name for the marketing activity.

Generally you would know this based on the marketing campaign you're working on. For instance, it could be Mattress offers.

Should this be a one off link, you should think about using something here that could 'group' this, or similar marketing activity later. For instance, if you sent a lot of 'follow up' emails to sales calls, you could use something like Follow up stage X.

These two are optional:

?

UTM Content is the sub categorisation of a Campaign.

In a paid campaign this would usually be Ad Group or Ad Set, for instance Q1 discounts.
If this was a link in an email it would generally be the position of the link, Header, or Product block, for instance.

?

UTM Term is the keyword or ad in paid activity. For instance it could be Buy discount mattress, or Coffee grinders.

In an email, this could be the specific link that's being clicked. For instance, if your email containted links to a number of different products, your term could be the product name, Acme Coffee Master, or Dynamic position 1 for instance.

Ringside specific parameters

Add these if possible (But please, no PII - emails, names, etc!):

?

If this link is going to a single person (perhaps in a manually sent email), and this customer has an ID that's used internally (perhaps their lead ID, or customer number) you should include it here.

This will help Ringside understand the customer has interacted with the email (clicked on a link that's brought them to your website) and it can be placed into a user's journey.

Please note, Ringside does not accept or store PII and this should not be used here. This includes names, email addresses, telephone numbers - or anything else that could personally identify someone.

?

Adding a sales or agent ID can help us identify the original source of (or in this case the person who posted) the link.

Perhaps you are a car salesman and post a link on numerous message boards for a car your garage has for sale. By adding the UTM parameters and your agent ID, if the car is subsequently sold, Ringside can correctly attribute you the agent as the source of the sale along with the message board link that drove the initial interest.
